Metakaolin is a calcined kaolin clay valued for its pozzolanic reactivity, used as a supplementary cementitious material to improve strength and durability in concrete. It reacts with free lime to produce a denser concrete with no efflorescence. By partially replacing clinker, a major source of CO₂ emissions in traditional cement production, metakaolin supports the shift toward lower-carbon, greener cement formulations.

Technical highlights

Key Performance Benefits

High pozzolanic reactivity

The combination of SiO₂ and Al₂O₃ reacts with calcium hydroxide during cement hydration, contributing additional strength-giving properties.

Lower-carbon footprint

Partially replaces clinker, reducing the CO₂ footprint of the concrete without sacrificing performance

Improved durability

Reduces permeability and improves resistance to chemical attack (sulfate and chloride ingress), extending concrete service life.

Reduced efflorescence

Due to the reaction of metakaolin with lime in the concrete.
